Fairytale living in the Chalet Moarhaus

It’s not every day that you reside like a landlord in a rustic, alpine ambience with first-class facilities.

With early booking, the Chalet Moarhaus can also be booked as a unit . With 8 bedrooms , 5 bathrooms, 4 separate toilets, a large common dining area and lounge on the 1st floor, it offers space for groups and families of 14 to 27 people . The large kitchen in the Moarstube is ideal for cooking together. Nevertheless, each family has its own retreat area due to the division into 4 apartments. The classroom is barrier-free. The wellness cellar can be used exclusively.

The attic room, a double room with a folding bed (160x200cm) on the 2nd floor, can be booked as an 8th bedroom.

On the ground floor there is a ski boot room with a heated boot dryer for 2x 20 pairs of shoes, a ski cellar and a bicycle and garbage room with a separate (barrier-free) rear entrance.

Salzburg craftsmanship combines the old with the new

Special attention was paid to the harmonious design of the existing building structure using pure natural materials in organic quality and regionality :

  • – Light birch wood from our own forest, untreated and oiled instead of varnished
  • – dark old wood from the old building
  • – carved and self-designed lamps made of wood and copper and iron
  • – Pure natural lime as paint instead of synthetic paints
  • – Natural materials such as cotton, leather, Schladming loden
  • – East Tyrolean sheep’s wool is used as a filler in the blankets
  • – artistically hand-forged curtain rods and handrails
  • – Rauris stone slabs instead of plastic surfaces (floors and kitchen countertops)

These sustainable natural materials create a unique natural and healthy feel-good atmosphere.

Tradition and rustic atmosphere: a journey into the past

As soon as you enter the Moarhaus, the rustic entrance area with Rauris floor tiles, artistically forged curtain rods and a restored original slug window lets you immerse yourself in a bygone era. Some of the original stone walls were not plastered, but left on sight.

Common dining and lounge area

In the dining area, hand-forged and original torch lamps illuminate the rustic, blackened wooden walls. Two L-shaped tables can seat up to 20 people. A workbench was converted into a sideboard. There is also a cupboard with a drinks fridge. Lots of cushions with farm animals add cosiness and a sense of luxury.

In the lounge next door you can relax with a view of the grass mountains and orchards of the Saalhof. A noble sofa, covered with real Schladming loden is the eye-catcher.

A journey into the past

In the years 2016-18 we renovated the Moarhaus from the 16th century lovingly, sustainably and in consultation with the monument office . Originally it was the caretaker’s house (commonly known as “Moar”), who lives on the upper floor on the south side, where other servants also had bedrooms. The ground floor housed the bread oven, laundry room, workshop, smithy and workrooms for the farm, as well as storage rooms for potatoes and fruit in the basement. In the 19th century part of the Maishofen school was outsourced here.

The preparatory work began 10 years ago, so the roof was renewed, the foundation completely renovated, and various functions were outsourced: Most recently, the Moarhaus had a workshop, firewood storage, a sheep and goat pen, and on the 1st floor (!) a chicken coop and various storage rooms. Only the distillery has remained.

In the fall of 2016, we started deworming the roof structure, dehumidifying the masonry, concreting and strengthening the basement walls, which would otherwise have collapsed, until the basement was excavated with a mini excavator to create a good staircase and space for the shower and toilet in the wellness area.

Our wellness cellar, a place of relaxation

In the basement is now the wellness area with a huge wooden wine barrel that houses the mud sauna ; the showers and the toilet are located in the newly excavated basement area: the rustic outer basement wall was simply left as a dividing wall. Our wellness cellar, like the rest of the Moarhaus, reflects our building philosophy :

Old masonry, original cellar vaults and old wood ceilings in the shower area combined with vintage lights reminiscent of old kerosene lamps, hand-forged handrails and modern fiberglass concrete panels in the shower area.

Modern architecture, extravagant relaxation loungers and many details create a feel-good atmosphere for relaxation .
