Easter customs
Osterbrauchtum Schloss Saalhof Easter starts with the blessing of the palm leafs, people are meeting at Castle Saalhof at 9.45 am. An altar is built up and decorated by our family. The previous day the farmer’s wife arranges little bunches of catkins, every guest child is welcome to arrange their own bunch and decorate it afterwards with salt pretzels and coloured tapes. The Pinzgau dialect has funny names for late risers: On Palm Sunday you are called, for example, a palm ox, on Maundy Thursday a „stinking egg“ ("stinkats Oa"). On Maundy Thursday we traditionally colour and decorate the Easter eggs with the first flowers and some grass ... All guest children are invited to help! We avoid eating any meat from Maundy Thursday until Easter Saturday lunch time; these are strict dietary days; then the Easter roast follows. In the afternoon at around 4.00 pm, the priest blesses our dishes for dinner; in the evening we enjoy the blessed food (home-baked Paschal Lamb, bread, bacon, cheese, Easter eggs, horseradish and salt)...
